The people we meet on vacation are a classic friends-to-lovers rom-com. A recent movie adaptation was made for the book by author Emily Henry. It features Poppy, who is driven by her desire to travel the world, and Alex, who enjoys the simplicity of his hometown. They both become best friends early on in their college career, and agree that no matter where life takes each of them, they meet up for a week-long vacation in a different part of the world every year. As time goes on, they realize their feelings for each other, but also face challenges because they both want different things in their lives. Poppy realizes that she didn’t want to be tied to one place because of her fear that people would learn about her true self. The ending is filled with a passionate twist to their story.
I would give this movie a 8.5/10. It is a movie that you must watch for yourself because words can’t fully give you the feel of it. It will have you yearning for the same love story that the two characters share. I do think that we don’t learn enough about Poppy and her own life. Other than the fact that she is a travel blog writer and lives in a small New York City apartment, we don’t learn much about her own personal story. Throughout the movie, I was left wondering more about her. Many people have said that they enjoyed the book more, which is a common theme in books that are made into movies.
The movie also brings up the idea of being afraid to let people learn more about who you are or being vulnerable out of fear that they won’t like those parts of you. This is a movie that teaches you the importance of opening yourself up because there will always be someone who loves you for you.
