As winter approaches winter sports are starting up. According to the head coach and a RAHS gymnast, RAHS gymnastics is a great option for anyone to try.
Head gymnastics coach Maddie Pearson said that, “Coaching the RAHS gymnastics team is an experience rooted in long-standing traditions, resilience, and a strong sense of community. Over the years, the program has continued to grow while maintaining the family-like atmosphere that defines it. Coaches highlight that one of the team’s greatest strengths is its diversity-gymnasts join with a wide range of experience levels, skills, and backgrounds, creating a uniquely well-rounded and supportive environment.”
Pearson added, “The program welcomes all athletes, regardless of prior gymnastics experience. While there are no formal tryouts, an evaluation period during the first week of the season allows coaches to assess strength, foundational knowledge, and coachability. Prospective athletes are encouraged to attend summer training sessions or captain-run practices to better prepare for the season.”
A gymnast on the team, Priscilla Agyako (11) explained why she joined the team. She said, “I joined gymnastics from cheer because I needed a fresh start, so I thought that gymnastics could offer me that, which it did. I also joined because I love the sport and as a little girl I would always watch it on my TV.”
Gymnastics has many benefits. Pearson mentioned, “…[gymnastics] provides young athletes with far more than gymnastics skills. It teaches mental toughness, accountability, trust, and resilience—qualities that carry into everyday life. The team places strong value on helping athletes not only improve physically but also learn about themselves and the positive influence they can have on those around them.”
Agyako similarly said, “I think others should try gymnastics because it helps you mentally overcoming obstacles because in my personal opinion I feel like gymnastics is the most mental sport. I feel like it could help you deal with things not only physically but also mentally and just overcome those challenges that you’re facing.”
Pearson addresses the small number of athletes when she said, “Looking ahead, the coaching staff is especially excited to see this year’s smaller squad build close bonds and grow in confidence. With fewer athletes, we anticipate even more meaningful connections, memorable experiences, and opportunities for personal growth.”
Agyako added that she looked forward to, “…building a bond with my new teammates and upgrading my skills because I feel like I’ve improved a lot during our previous season and I think that it would be a nice way to start and end off the season being a new and improved gymnast.”
Pearson says, “Community members interested in becoming superfans or volunteering can reach out to Maddie Pearson at [email protected].
