RAHS Students for Climate Action is a student led club that meets on Wednesday mornings at 8:15am at the District Center. On the morning of Wednesday, January 14th the club sponsored a showing of The Lorax. Later, I interviewed junior Esmie Sandanayake about the club and how the event went.
What is the club’s goal?
“RAHS Students for Climate Action works to make the Roseville community and school district a more environmentally conscious space. We hope to show people that caring for the environment can be shown through big and small actions; make it clear the impacts of what we do and how to minimize [our impacts to the environment]. We also hope to connect with the Roseville community through what we do, creating bonds or projects that last longer than our high school career.”
Why was it important to show the movie The Lorax?
“For our club The Lorax was a way to show the effects that greed and capitalism has on the environment in an intriguing and fun way. It was a way to reach more of the school and get them thinking about their actions more frequently. The movie was also a way to expand our club and
get more people to hear about it”.
How did the event go?
“Besides the technical difficulties, which didn’t allow us to finish it, I think the movie went very well. We had many people who came to watch the movie and we almost ran out of snacks. We had a couple more people show interest in our club and as a small club we want as many people as we can get”!
What is your favorite activity/part of the club?
“So far my favorite thing to do/about the club is being able to connect with people who have similar interests with me. I’ve gotten to speak with many new people who live in our community and have been able to hear about what they do and how they got there; I’ve been able to expose myself to a field that I want to spend my life in through these people. I also like how the commitment is based on what to want. You’re not obligated to do an amount of things to be in the club and it’s free, so it’s fully based off of passion”.
The environmental club is a great club to join if you are looking to meet new people, have a passion for the environment, and want to try something new! You can find ways to reduce your own ecological footprint and help make a difference in our community.
