Roseville Area Speech club has just started their season, and many students are curious about what it is. Speech is a club focused on improving public speaking skills and interpretation of texts. Competitions are held at various schools allowing students to show off their skills.
Speech at RAHS has their students competing in seven different categories. Some will compete by themselves, while other categories are made up of teams that work together. The club meets up every Thursday after school. Individual coaching with assigned coaches also takes place once at various times a week.
We asked two of the coaches, Brett Hemmerlin and Megan Soosai what they think people should know about speech.
Hemmerlin stated, “Anyone can do it – Kids that walk away from this activity, they walk away from it more confident, clear communicators, and more prepared for world outside of high school.”
Additionally, Soosai adds, “ I don’t think people think of it as a very creative activity, but for me, it is a huge creative activity, we really get to figure out how best to communicate, what we want to research, and what we want to create together.”
The season lasts from mid-spring and goes on towards the start of summer. Speech starts their season opener on the 24th of January. They will be competing in many competitions and tournaments up until April 24th.
