Song: Jolene- Dolly Parton
This song is every good thing about old country music. Plucky acoustic guitar, Dolly’s royal vocals, and 10/10 storytelling, with the fascinating narrative of Dolly pleading with another woman, because she is scared her partner will leave for this other person. Sing along choruses, a great vibe, and masterful production. I’m not sure there’s much this song doesn’t have. I understand how formulaic, annoying, and basic a lot of people find country music to be today, with repetitive lyrics, corporate sound, and lots of southern stereotypes accentuated. However, I urge you to listen to this song, to be reminded of just how amazing this genre can be.

Album: Aja- Steely Dan

Steely Dan are a jazz-pop-rock band from the 70s. They are amazing at 3 things in particular: flawless production, having a rotating lineup of extremely talented musicians, and rather well written lyrics. This albums does all three and more at a higher level than they have ever done. This is a genre bending album with jazzy solos, catchy choruses, and great instrumentals. These guys are perfectionists, and it shines here. Amazing songs, don’t miss it.

Artist: Wet Leg

This band is an exciting indie punk group from Isle of Wight. Composed of Rhian Teasdale (lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist), and Hester Chambers (lead guitarist), these women are the change in rock we need. Combining addictive guitar riffs, genuinely funny lyrics, and layers of sarcasm and sass. While I recommend you check out the entirety of their debut album (self titled), I would listen to the lead single, Chaise Lounge above anything else. With plenty of wit, a Mean Girls reference in the lyrics, and an explosive chorus, this song will leave you wanting to hear more every time.
