A popular goal many high school students have for themselves is to get a job. Jobs can be hard to obtain but reportedly many students here at Roseville have a wide array of jobs. As the school year comes to an end and summer approaches, many students are looking for a summer job.
Many RAHS students work in retail. Retail jobs usually open up positions in the summertime. The most common retail stores that are hiring at the moment include Target, TJ Maxx, Old Navy, etc. Throughout my reporting, I found that a large percentage of our student body works or has worked in retail, most specifically at Target and JCPenney.
Student Halima Aden said, “Working at Target can be stressful for many reasons, however one thing I find hard to adjust to is interacting with guests.”
With any job, providing quality customer service is a critical skill. Furthermore student Yusuf Farah, who works at JCPenney, said, “Many customers don’t have a filter and will say rude things sometimes”.
Another tip for successfully working in retail is to take everything customers say with skepticism. It can be hard dealing with difficult customers but interactions such as those teach us how to deal with tough situations.
Retail jobs usually pay between $11-17 an hour. These jobs can be found by doing a quick google search. In my personal experience, I’ve found that if a job doesn’t respond within 3-5 days, the best thing to do is to call the company and inquire about the application.
When asked about a popular job during the summer Anne Barnes, Roseville Area Schools Avid Coordinator said, “ Many students attend camps during the summertime and with that oftentimes many camp counselors are needed to support the camp.”
A camp counselor’s job is to supervise and lead groups of kids ranging from children to teenagers. They plan activities and execute them. To be a camp counselor, communication and leadership skills are key. Counselors must be able to communicate effectively to ensure children’s safety in the various activities. Counselors get paid anywhere between $6-22 an hour.
Logan N, a former camp counselor here at Roseville Area High School talks about his experience; “ Being a camp counselor was an experience that taught me many life lessons. Working outside so much, I learned to appreciate nature more. It was also really fun working with the kids. I enjoyed my time there.”
Many students said having a summer job or a job in general is something that everyone should try to do. Having a job provides so many benefits. It teaches life skills and lessons while also preparing you for the work field. A job can teach how to interact with people and how to network with those around you. But perhaps the biggest benefit, and the one we’re all thinking of, is the money.
Overall it’s recommended that most students get a job during high school; whether we love our jobs or not, decision.
