Students at RAHS shared how they use their asynchronous learning days, many students found that they aren’t as helpful as intended. In recent years, asynchronous days have been something many schools have implemented.
These days involve teachers posting assignments online, however they aren’t allowed to post or teach any new material, it must be a review. This can lead students to feel that the work isn’t important.
RAHS junior, Kara Willams, said, “Most of the time the school work is just an attendance sheet on google form or schoology.”
Williams added, “I feel I’m not productive, because the work isn’t as important.”
Asynchronous days can be a break for both students and staff. Students feel grateful that they get a chance to sleep in and relax.
Maya Adhikari (11), stated, “I’m really happy we get to sleep in, I get so tired with sports and stuff that I love getting the chance for a little extra sleep.”
RAHS Junior, Carmen Balderama shared the same sentiment, she said, “I like getting to sleep in, you know, but at the same time I still have to get up and do homework.”
Many students get disappointed that they still have to do schoolwork. But most find the work easier than regular days.
RAHS senior, Naamah Myers, said, “I feel good when I find out we have an asynchronous day, I don’t have to be in the building and I can do work on my own time”
Myers added, “The work is manageable, it’s better if the teachers tell us ahead of time what the work is though.”
During asynchronous days teachers offer office hours using zoom. Where students can attend if they need help with content or assignments. But it seems many students aren’t taking advantage of this.
Williams said, “I have never done the office hours, because what we are doing on asynchronous days isn’t very hard.”
Myers also said she had never used the office hours.
From students we’ve interviewed, many said that teachers’ instructions for these days were clear and easy to understand. Adhikari said, “The teacher provides really good instructions and like a step by step to do list for us, which is nice.”
Junior, Balderama said, “I really like how easy the work is. And the teachers explain it pretty well.”
