The leaders Aryana Berhane and Linze Franklin have created a safe space for black and brown women in Roseville Area High School called Soul Flo!
What inspired them to create SoulFlo?
What inspired them was a need for authenticity within our community at Roseville; they wanted to create a safe space for them, because “We weren’t always given a seat at the table.” This gave them the opportunity to have a seat, but also create a whole new table.
What steps did they take to make the actual club?
The first step they took was advertising! They advertise heavily to get brown and black girls to join.
They also try to increase their social media presence, and that’s what really brought attention to their mission online. They had their fair share of struggles, but given the skills they were taught, they used them to overcome those challenges.
What is SoulFlo mainly about?
This club is a place to do activities, events, spark creativity, and power and uplift one another. Overall, it’s to become the best version of ourselves. Sometimes within our school, we lack spaces for black and brown women so this club creates a place for us to thrive.
What type of activities are done in SoulFlo?
They do all sorts of activities. An event they recently had was a refresher sale where students and staff could purchase a refresher. It was extremely successful, and they were able to completely sell out before our lunches were done.
Another activity we have is guest speakers. This is something the girls really enjoy. They also play games and get to know one another.
Future plans for SoulFlo?
Something they really want in the future is to overall increase the number of members they already have. They started the club last year in the third trimester, and they have hit so many milestones and accomplished so many things since then.
They would also prefer more field trips, have more fundraiser events, and have more women of color in the community. Speak to them!
