Many people use AI for different subjects at RAHS such as social studies, math, etc, but many students have been turning to AI use especially in English Language Arts Courses at RAHS. Students tend to use AI as a guide on essays, writing assistance, and overall learning.
Many students have expressed that although the use of AI can be beneficial, it can also be harmful in many ways due to the lack of diversity and voices.
Miryam Awmaalin, a sophomore at RAHS, thinks that AI takes away from the uniqueness of everybody’s voices because everyone goes through different things in their lives, making them unique in the way that they think. AI, on the other hand, is just programmed with factual information it finds online, and isn’t built on experience nor emotion.
Awmaalin explained that AI cannot comprehend everyone’s views, and due to the AI’s lack of creativity and critical thinking, it silences people who have unique experiences on certain subjects. This can be detrimental to a student’s learning, especially in English, because it affects the way that they are able to write and comprehend certain materials in English.
Many people think that generative AI has narrowed the learning happening in classes and the diversity of perspectives that students are exposed to. RAHS educators acknowledge that AI isn’t going anywhere, so they are trying to develop new ways to navigate through this reality and build awareness on how to use AI responsibly.
Robyn Madson, a 9th grade English teacher at RAHS, who also teaches media studies and debate, expressed that AI could never appreciate the nuances of literature.
She also recognizes AI’s shortfall in stealing quotes and evidence from other sources without giving them any credit. Madson worries that people in charge of AI seek the dark web and steal information from books, and tend to turn a blind eye to giving credit, or informing the reader where they got the information from.
In summary, AI has its pros and cons but because it’s not going anywhere. Students should be taught the importance and responsibility of AI as well as experiment with it so they can avoid pitfalls of plagiarism and learn how to maneuver with AI appropriately.
