This year at RAHS there is a change in the schedule with the addition of Homeroom. Homeroom was created to give time for students to connect with others and learn more about different cultures.
Many years ago, a space given in the day for these activities was called an advisory. Advisory was a twenty minute class period built into second period to make announcements about upcoming events.
Three years ago Raider Time was in put place; this was a 30 minute period at the end of the day where students could go around the school and get help. Raider Time was dropped from the schedule because it was hard to keep track of students.
Students have differing views of homeroom but many are not fans.
Logan Dam (11) expressed how it doesn’t work and said, “I feel like it was made to talk about our feelings. No one likes talking about their feelings; they are shoving mental health stuff down their throat.”
Dam also expressed what should change. They said, “this hour should be an hour to interact with people but no one interacts with each other. It’s all about community but the only community building we have done was once years ago.”
Calais Xiong (10) said “I want Homeroom to be gone.”
Ms Westland said, “Homeroom is helpful, but how to initiate it in a good way is still a struggle.” She acknowledged that there are differing levels of participation in homeroom. She said, “some students [interact during homeroom] and some do homework.”
Mr Cave said, “I think there could be some change.”
Overall students feel negatively about it and teachers express neutrality.
