Solid start for JV boys soccer

The JV boys soccer team has started brightly this season. They have a current record of 8-1-1 with their lone defeat coming on the first day of the season away at Centennial.

It did not take long for the first win to come, their second game was a 4-0 win over Eagan with junior forward Lawrence Leon scoring a hat trick.

Ever since that win over Eagan they have been on a roll. They are undefeated in their last nine games, eight wins and a single draw against south suburban conference powerhouse Eastview from Apple Valley.

Junior defender Jonny Brand has said at this point in the season, the main goal is to not lose anymore games and keep playing well.

JV coach Keith Gephard said the team’s goals are, “to continue to grow as players, to grow within the confines of a team, to continue to have a better understanding of the game, and to establish relationships between the players.”

There have been a lot of different players who have shined this season, but one player who stands out in particular is junior forward Lawrence Leon who has bagged eleven goals in nine games.

Senior goalkeeper Diarra Minietamani has said that Lawrence is one of the stand out players on the team because of the way he gets between players and scores goals.

Coach Keith Gephard when asked about the stand out players on the team said, “There’s not a most important player, it’s a team sport, it requires a team effort, if I had to pick three players to make the system work it would be Jose, Rawson, and Lawrence however they can’t do what they do without the other players”. Rawson Yang is a junior midfielder and Jose Urrutia is a senior defender.

The team has had some impressive comebacks as well. The team was down 2-0 at Park Center and came from behind to pick up a 2-3 win over the Pirates from Brooklyn Park. Just this week the team was 3-0 down at White Bear Lake but rallied in the second half to grab a 3-4 win over their suburban east conference rivals.

The team’s latest game was a 5-3 win over Forest Lake.

The varsity team has had a decent start to the season. Their record is 5-4-1. They, like the JV, started the season with an away defeat against Centennial.

Their first win came with an impressive 1-0 win over Eastview. They are the only team to beat the Lightning this season. According to MN soccer hub Eastview have a record of 9-1 as they sit at the top of the table in the south suburban conference.

The varsity teams main source of goals this year has been junior forward Youssef Abdallah who according to MN soccer hub has scored an impressive 11 goals this season. He scored five in the team’s most recent game, a 6-2 win over Forest Lake.

According to MN soccer hub the varsity team is currently 3rd in the suburban east conference just behind East Ridge in second and ranked 3rd in the state Woodbury who top the table.

Both JV and varsity have their next game at Hill-Murray on Saturday the 21st.
